Tragic confirmation of Julian Sands' death

Missing British actor Julia Sands has been confirmed dead at age 65.

Californian hikers discovered human remains in the surrounding area where the actor was said to have vanished, and the remains have now been identified as Sands, according to authorities.

"The identification process for the body located on Mt. Baldy on June 24, 2023, has been completed and was positively identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood," the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

"The manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results," it continued.

"We would like to extend our gratitude to all the volunteers that worked tirelessly to locate Mr. Sands.”

Sands’ tragic death comes days after a search and rescue was resumed by the San Bernardino Sherrif’s Office, which had been leading the searches for the missing actor over the past six months.

The local region experienced wild and uncharacteristic weather which led to a more difficult search.

Sands was first reported missing in January after setting out to hike the notoriously dangerous Mount Baldy, which rises more than 10,000 feet (approx. 3048 metres) east of Los Angeles and has been hit with severe storms during their winter season.

"We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer," the statement said.

Sands’ family released a statement at the time of his disappearance, saying, "Our heartfelt thanks to the compassionate members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department who are coordinating the search for our beloved Julian, not least the heroic search teams listed below who are braving difficult conditions on the ground and in the air to bring Julian home,”

Sands’ son Henry also released a statement in April to praise the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department for their continued efforts in rescuing his father.

"I am hugely appreciative for all the efforts made so far from the volunteer search and rescue climbers and the San Bernardino county sheriff team to bring my father home," Henry Sands told The Times.

Human remains found in search for missing actor

Californian hikers have discovered human remains in the wilderness area where actor Julian Sands disappeared more than five months ago, according to authorities.

Officials have not yet identified the victim.

The remains were transported to the coroner’s office for confirmation, which is expected to be completed next week, The New York Post reported.

Sands was reported missing on January 13 after he failed to return from a hiking trip in Mount Baldy, located about 72 kilometres east of Los Angeles.

The search – consisting of 80 volunteers and officials – resumed on June 12 after a temporary suspension.

Police have conducted eight ground and air searches since the actor's disappearance on the mountain.

“Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions. Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10-plus feet [about 16 metres] of ice and snow,” San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sands’ family spoke publicly for the first time since he vanished, releasing a statement on June 23 to express their gratitude for the ongoing search and rescue efforts.

“We are deeply grateful to the search teams and co-ordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian,” the family said.

“We continue to hold Julian in our hearts, with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer.”

Sands is known for starring in films such as Arachnophobia, A Room with a View, Warlock and Leaving Las Vegas.

Mt. Baldy is renowned for being one of the most dangerous peaks to climb in California.

According to the Los Angeles Times, six people have died with crews conducting over 100 searches as daredevils and avid hikers alike are drawn to the daunting challenge of the more-than-16,000 metre climb.

In January, officials found hiker Jin Chung, 75, who had become lost on Mount Baldy and was hospitalised with a leg injury and other weather-related injuries.

Before Chung’s brief disappearance, a mother of four fell more than 500 to 700 feet to her death.

Crystal Paula Gonzalez, renowned as a “hiking queen”, slipped on the steep icy hillside and later died from her injuries, officials reported.

"As fake as they come": Oprah blasted by fellow Hollywood star

The talk show queen has come under fire by fellow Hollywood star, Rose McGowan, who claims her “fake” persona hides the “ugly truth”.

Oprah was well-known for her top-rating talk show but now she’s become famous for being able to get all the biggest names to talk to her about how they really feel – including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

But now she’s being accused of faking her support of the #MeToo movement by activist and actress Rose McGowan.

Known for her roles in major movies and the TV series Charmed, McGowan posted a scathing tweet about the talk show queen, describing her as “as fake as they come”.

“I am glad more are seeing the ugly truth of @Oprah,” McGowan tweeted, along with an old photo of Winfrey, now 67, virtually kissing convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein.

“I wish she were real, but she isn’t.” tweets McGowan.

I am glad more are seeing the ugly truth of @Oprah. I wish she were real, but she isn’t. From being pals with Weinstein to abandoning & destroying Russell Simmon’s victims, she is about supporting a sick power structure for personal gain, she is as fake as they come. #lizard pic.twitter.com/RCuXNpWCU0
— Rose 🌊McGowan (@rosemcgowan) August 29, 2021

Herself an outspoken survivor of sexual assault, McGowan continues: “From being pals with Weinstein to abandoning & destroying Russell Simmon’s [sic] victims, she is about supporting a sick power structure for personal gain, she is as fake as they come. #lizard.”

Weinstein’s long list of alleged sexual assaults dating back to the 1970s was the catalyst for the #MeToo movement in October 2017, with McGowan being one of the first of dozens of women to accuse him of rape.

The disgraced film producer, who has denied having “any non-consensual sex,” was found guilty of two felonies in February 2020 and is currently serving time in Wende Correctional Facility.

Meanwhile, Russell Simmons has also been accused of rape and sexual misconduct by 20 women. The music executive, 63, has denied the accusations and kept a low profile in recent years, though he resurfaced in the Hamptons earlier this month.

McGowan’s tweet refers to an earlier documentary

It appears McGowan’s tweet refers to an earlier documentary which Oprah was going to be involved with. This 2020 documentary titled On The Record was centred around Simmons’ alleged sexual misconduct.

While she was originally on board to executive-produce the project, she ended up backing out, citing differences with the film’s directors.

In a statement, Winfrey said: “I have decided that I will no longer be executive producer on the untitled Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering documentary, and it will not air on Apple TV+,” Winfrey said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter in January 2020.

“I want it to be known that I unequivocally believe and support the women. Their stories deserve to be told and heard. In my opinion, there is more work to be done on the film to illuminate the full scope of what the victims endured, and it has become clear that the filmmakers and I are not aligned in that creative vision.”

Not the first time McGowan has accused a celebrity of ‘faking’ it

This is not the first time McGowan has publicly accused a high-profile figure of faking their support of the #MeToo movement.

Last year, she hit out at her Charmed co-star Alyssa Milano, calling her a #MeToo “fraud”.

The ugly Twitter spat occurred when Milano expressed her support for then-Presidential candidate Joe Biden and the Democratic Party.

McGowan has long been opposed to Biden after claims he had sexually assaulted Tara Reade, leading her to label Milano a fraud and a liar.

Image: Twitter

Prince William and Duchess Kate comfort fellow parents at mental health event

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met with the father of 14-year-old Molly Russell after the teenager took her own life.

They spoke to her father Ian Russell, who has been campaigning tirelessly to help raise awareness about mental health ever since his daughter passed due to seeing suicide related posts on Instagram.

William has previously put tech giants on blast as he believes they aren’t doing enough to prevent bullying and other problems. He questioned whether they could do better during the Shout messaging helpline event at Troubadour White City Theatre.

The second-in-line to the throne wrote to Mr Russell and his family earlier in the year, offering his condolences. Molly, 14, from Harrow in northwest London, committed suicide in November 2017 after viewing graphic material on self-harm and suicide.

Today, he asked the young girl’s father: “Do you think companies like Instagram are doing enough?”

He then added: “If we can help you in any way please let us know.”

Mr Russell has previously accused Instagram of “helping to kill” his daughter after the family discovered she had been “suggested” disturbing posts on Instagram and Pinterest about anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicide.

“My thoughts on Instagram are, we’re grateful that they’re doing something but I think they’re only really inching along the road, and they need to do a lot more,” he said.

Since her passing, the social media app has promised to ban graphic self-harm photos from its site.

Scroll through the gallery to see William and Kate at the Shout messaging helpline event.

Traveller shames fellow plane passenger for disgusting in-flight habit

A passenger was grossed out after a man placed his bare feet on the in-flight entertainment screen, leaving dirty toe print marks on the wall.

Taking to social media, American comedian Andy Richter posted images of the incident.

He also provided an explanation as to how he managed to get him to stop.

He wrote: “So I snitched this f***** out to the flight attendant, who told him to put them down.

“Puts them back a few minutes later & I asked him to put them down. ‘They’re your bare feet, man’.

“He was shocked and put them down. People are so disgusting.”

"She did not like me”: Dannii Minogue's tense relationship with mother-in-law

Dannii Minogue was once married to actor Julian McMahon, which seems like a lifetime ago for the star. They met when they were both starring on Home and Away, but Minogue has shed some light on what their marriage was like behind the scenes, especially her relationship with her mother-in-law, Lady Sonia McMahon.

Minogue appeared on Anh’s Brush with Fame and was surprisingly candid about her past.

"His family did not like me. There's a certain social pecking order and I was definitely not in that scene. She [Sonia] only spoke to me a couple of times," Minogue explained to Anh.

Things eventually escalated to where Minogue was banned from the house.

"She would not let me go to the family house. Sometimes [Julian] had to go and collect something and I was waiting in the car out the front. It was as if I'd done something wrong to the family, but I hadn't done anything wrong," she admitted.

Lady Sonia McMahon and son Julian McMahon

Minogue also revealed that Sonia caused trouble at the wedding.

"On the actual day of the wedding there was drama. [Sonia] said she wasn't going to show up, so that's quite stressful. Julian and I were going ahead with the marriage regardless.

"So she did end up coming and was causing a scene … it wasn't the greatest … it was hard. I just tried to stay away from it, I just wanted to enjoy the day."

The marriage lasted for 18 months, with the pair divorcing in 1996.

The pair have both since moved on, as Julian is onto his third marriage after tying the knot with Kelly Paniagua in 2014, and Minogue shares 8-year-old son Ethan with her ex Kris Smith, and is in a relationship with music producer, Adrian Newman.

Exciting news for Downton Abbey fans

After months and months of speculation, hints and cast rumours, a Downton Abbey film has finally been confirmed. The big screen treatment of the hit BBC period drama, which sadly ended last year, will be written by Downton creator Julian Fellowes.

So confident in the possibility of a movie has Fellowes been that he reportedly began writing the script prior to receiving the green light from producers. Click here to read his thoughts on what the film might look like.

Filming is set to begin in September, with casting announcements to come through as they are confirmed. Although, it seems likely that a few cast members are already onboard – last year, Joanna Froggatt (who played Anna Bates) said she’d “love to do it”.

“I think everybody would. We're all willing to do it, and willing it to happen... As long as we can get everyone together, it would be delightful.”

Phyllis Logan (who played Mrs Hughes) also revealed to Over60 she’d be keen to be involved in a movie. “If they want me in it, I think it would be lovely to have one last hurrah, wouldn’t it?”

However, it might be difficult to wrangle Dame Maggie Smith, who last year told Graham Norton she didn’t see how it would be possible. “By the time we finished, she must have been about 110. It couldn’t go on and on, it just didn’t make sense.”

Only time will tell how the film pans out, but no matter what, we’ll be watching.

Downton Abbey creator reveals what would have happened next

It’s been almost a year since we said goodbye to the Crawleys of Downton Abbey, and if, like us, you’ve been desperate for more, you’re in luck. Julian Fellowes, the show’s creator, has opened up about what might have happened if the series were to continue, offering glimpses into what a possible movie could look like.

When we left Downton Abbey, the grand estate was under a bit of financial strife, with the Crawleys (like many families at the time) struggling to reconcile the maintenance of such a house in a time where they were becoming no longer relevant. In order to compensate for this, Fellowes believes Mary (played by Michelle Dockery) would step in with an ingenious solution – opening the Abbey to the public full-time.

“My own belief is that Mary, whether you like her or dislike her, is a hard worker, and she’s practical,” Fellowes explained. “She would probably have opened the house to the public in the 1960s, as so many of them did, and she'd have retreated to a wing, and maybe only occupied the whole house during the winters.”

And where would the Crawley descendants be today? “[They] would still be there, just as the Carnarvons [owners of the real-life location Highclere Castle] are today.”

Fellowes also gave us a glimpse into the lives of the youngest Crawleys. “George [Mary’s first son] would have gone to the Second World War, and of course the fear is that he would be killed,” he said. “As for the title, I don’t know where it would go beyond George, but let’s hope he gets through the war and has children of his own.”

Let’s hope we’ll see some of this play out on the big screen! Tell us in the comments below, what shows are you watching at the moment?

Related links:

Julian Fellowes reveals details about Downton Abbey film

Downton Abbey’s Mrs Hughes tells Over60 what it was like wrapping up season 6

24 hilarious quotes from Violet Crawley
